A Bar Harbor Summer Cottage of the 1870s

A Stick Style Bar Harbor summer cottage of the 1870s.

Named the “Stick Style” by the great architectural historian Vincent Scully, these mid-to-late 19th century houses were never particularly common. The characteristic trim elements of the style are very exposed to the weather and many houses have lost them over time – making preservation of surviving examples all the more important.

Learn more about this and two dozen other styles in Chapter 2 of Restoring Your Historic House, The Comprehensive Guide for Homeowners. Now at the printer and available for pre-order from Amazon and Barnes and Noble!
