Transitional Federal to Greek Revival Doorway.

This beautiful doorway is located in an intact block of brick rowhouses in New Orleans. The row is primarily Federal in style but the new Greek Revival style makes an appearance in these entries. The opening, with an elliptical arched top, is Federal but the substantial Ionic columns are Greek Revival. A completely Federal doorway would typically have thinner Doric columns.

Houses that combine elements of more than one style are not at all uncommon. Many were built that way and others have had alterations in later styles. Understanding what the style of your house is and how it changed over time is key to planning your restoration project. Chapter 2 of Restoring Your Historic House, The Comprehensive Guide for Homeowners delves deeply into this topic with hundreds of photos and case studies to help you learn to identify stylistic features and changes from the past.
