Many people in the preservation community are asking how they can help to address the issues of racial disparity that have become so much clearer in recent weeks. One way that relates to our interest in historic buildings is to support efforts to preserve important landmarks related to our nation’s African American history. Restoring African American history is an important way to change perceptions about the contributions of black Americans to our nation.
A project I have been involved in as a preservation consultant is the restoration of the Abyssinian Meeting House in Portland, Maine. The third-oldest surviving African American place of worship in the nation, it was converted to an apartment building in the early 20th century, after members of its congregation were lost in the famous “Portland” shipwreck. They were crew members on the steamship.
