The adobe architecture of the Southwest is one of America’s regional building types that contributes greatly to the special character of the place. Often appearing as though it has emerged from the ground it sits on, the thick sculptural walls of the adobe house moderate the heat of the daytime sun and cold of high desert nights.
I took this photo while in Santa Fe, New Mexico three years ago this week to work with photographer David Clough to shoot the restored 1870s adobe Featured House for the book. I fell in love with the very special character of the city, largely created by its historic adobe architecture, and returned the following August for another visit. I had planned to be back there this year, until Corona sent everyone’s plans into the dust bin. I can’t wait to get back there next year!
In addition to the restored adobe Featured House, adobe houses are one of 25 styles and types described and illustrated in Chapter 2 of Restoring Your Historic House, The Comprehensive Guide for Homeowners!
