Back to Basics. I’ve spent a lot of time on various “old house” social media accounts over the past year. I regularly see homeowners asking questions about basic home maintenance, repair, and renovation issues. They too often get contradictory (and simply bad) advice from other group members.
In my book, I strongly recommend Michael Litchfield’s “Renovation, A Complete Guide” as the best go-to book for the basics of home maintenance, repair, and renovation. Now in its 5th edition, it has been my go-to since it was the assigned text book for a renovation technology program I took in 1985. I still have that volume, and all four newer editions (two of which are shown in the photo).
“Renovation” is available through bookstores, online retailers, and the Taunton Press website. If you are working on a house of any age, you should own this book.
My book, “Restoring Your Historic House, The Comprehensive Guide for Homeowners” goes beyond the basics and shows how to apply them to the special needs of a historic house. The 720-page award-winning and best-selling hardcover book contains more than 2,000 color photos and drawings and is based on more than 40 years experience in the historic preservation field.
Available in bookstores and from online retailers (currently 34% off on Amazon! http://ow.ly/N7ba50y4PSL).
Signed and personalized copies are available directly from the author on this site, click here: https://yourhistorichouse.com/shop/.
