Side-by-side houses with a shared party wall and mirror image plans have a variety of regional names. Depending on where they are, they might be called a double-house, duplex, twin, another name. They are most often symmetrical in design but occasionally have variations from one side to the other. Although sharing a wall and appearing as a single building, they typically are on separate lots and owned by two parties. The pairs are often free-standing, but can be found as part of an urban row, as in this example.
They can be found in virtually any style but were particularly popular during the Victorian era. This lovely double-house is in the Italianate style and was built in the 1860s.
Understanding the style of a house and will help you understand which features are character-defining so you can prioritize their preservation.
Italianate is one of 25 historic architectural styles described and illustrated in Chapter 2 of Restoring Your Historic House, The Comprehensive Guide for Homeowners.
