Transitional Italianate-Stick Style House

The Stick Style shares many features with the Italianate and Queen Anne styles but has several distinctions. This transitional Italianate-Stick Style house clearly combines elements of both styles. It was named by noted architectural historian Vincent Scully, who traced its development in the mid-19th century in his influential book, “The Shingle Style and the Stick Style.” The book is still in print and well worth owning if you have an interest in understanding Victorian era architecture.

He finds the roots of the style in the work of A.J. Downing and quotes a description of a design from a Downing book, “It partakes somewhat of Italian and Swiss features.” That description perfectly fits this wonderful example.

This example is essentially an Italianate style house until you reach the frieze under the eaves, where the Stick Style takes over. Unfortunately, the fascia at the eaves has lost the original wooden gutter which gave the edge of the roof a crown molding profile instead of the plain boxy form it now has. See the 1924 photo of the same house below.

Stick Style and Italianate are two of 25 styles and types illustrated in Chapter 2 of Restoring Your Historic House, The Comprehensive Guide for Homeowners.
