Vernacular saltwater farm in Addison, Washington County, Maine.
Vernacular architecture is defined as a type of local or regional construction, using traditional materials and resources from the area where the building is located. Consequently, this architecture is closely related to its context and responds to the specific geographic features and cultural aspects of its surroundings. For this reason, they are unique to different places in the world, and often recognized as part of the identity of the place.
I walked past this wonderful example of vernacular Down East architecture while visiting friends who have another old farm nearby. Note the sweep well at right center, still in use for drinking and cooking water. Homes like this are very much a part of the identity of this region, where you can easily feel like you are walking through an Andrew Wyeth painting.
“Restoring Your Historic House, The Comprehensive Guide for Homeowners” was written to help save the homes that give our towns and regions their identity.
The 720 page award-winning and best-selling hardcover book is available in bookstores and from online retailers.
Signed and personalized copies are available directly from the author in our shop, https://yourhistorichouse.com/shop/.
