Never Too Many Outlets!

Never Too Many Convenience Outlets!

“No home has too many of these handy little outlets to plug in electrical appliances. Every room should have at least two. They bring a flexibility to the decorative scheme throughout the home — furniture easily arranged to do away with that staid appearance — the washer or ironer placed just in the most convenient position to ease your work.”

This ad appeared in the Daily Kennebec Journal newspaper in February 1930. It is a good reminder that many historic homes were built before electricity was used in homes and that initially it was used primarily for lighting. As additional electrical appliances were developed, more outlets were needed in homes.

90 years later, the need for more electrical outlets seems not to have gone away. Electrical wiring, including tips for upgrading systems with minimal impact to finished surfaces, is covered in Chapter 10 of “Restoring Your Historic House, The Comprehensive Guide for Homeowners.”

The 720 page award-winning and best-selling hardcover book is available in bookstores and from online retailers.
