This 1920’s basket-weave pattern tiled floor is located in the Kowalski-Policht House, a Chicago Bungalow built in 1924.
The Craftsman style bungalow spread across the US in the early 20th century, providing housing for millions of middle-class Americans. In the expanding trolley suburbs of Chicago a particular type of bungalow evolved to suit the long narrow urban lots laid out by planners. More than 80,000 Chicago Bungalows were built!
With the introduction of indoor plumbing toward the end of the 19th century and increased understanding of the importance of washable sanitary surfaces for health, ceramic tile became a popular finish for kitchens and baths.
The Kowalski-Policht House is one of the 13 Featured Houses photographed by noted architectural photographer David Clough and presented between the how-to chapters of “Restoring Your Historic House, The Comprehensive Guide for Homeowners.”
