Modern Victorian Era Kitchen

“Prang’s Aids for Object Teaching—The kitchen.” Boston, L. Prang and Co., 1874.

A modern kitchen for the Victorian era. This 1874 chromolithograph shows a well-equipped kitchen of the late nineteenth century.

It featured a coal-fired cast iron brick-set range with a copper hot water tank (heated by the range), a built-in zinc, copper, or iron sink with hot and cold running water and a shelf and clock above, a freestanding work table with good window light, and an adjacent pantry for dishes and food storage. This example would have been found in an upper-middle class or wealthy home of the period.

Kitchen design for historic houses is covered in depth in Chapter 3 of “Restoring Your Historic House, The Comprehensive Guide for Homeowners.”

The book covers working with modular cabinetry or custom-built and lists different materials suitable for compatibility with different periods and styles. Many images are included of period kitchens to illustrate how kitchens changed over time and to provide design ideas for new kitchens.
