Lovely Italianate Style House

A lovely Italianate style house. The Italianate and Gothic Revival styles are known for introducing asymmetrical silhouettes to American homes, sometimes with towers, porches, bay windows, and other elements that broke up the simple rectangular box of earlier houses.

The cross-gabled form seen in this Brunswick, Maine example was popular for Italianate houses, moving away from the simple rectangular box form commonly used with earlier Colonial and Federal style houses. This change began with Greek Revival and accelerated as the 19th century progressed, culminating in the often exuberant and elaborate forms of the Queen Anne and Shingle styles.

Italianate is one of 25 styles and types illustrated in Chapter 2 of “Restoring Your Historic House, The Comprehensive Guide for Homeowners.”
