On the Road ~ A charming Italianate style New Orleans double shotgun house I photographed yesterday. This sweet house is in New Orleans’ French Quarter.
The shotgun house form, which is a long single room wide house, and its double shotgun variant, is the city’s most common house type. The form came to Lousiana from Hati at the start of the 19th century. Today, New Orleans has the greatest concentration of shotgun houses in the world, and they are a key part of the city’s unique historic character.
Identifying the character-defining features of a house is the foundation of planning a good rehabilitation. The topic is covered in detail in “Restoring Your Historic House, The Comprehensive Guide for Homeowners.”
