Faded Beauty ~ The Clardy-Gilliam House

Faded Beauty ~ The Clardy-Gilliam House, Talladega, AL. This brick house was built c. 1898 by W. Lyman Clardy and his father, who manufactured brick at the east end of Coffee Street. It is one of several houses on this block in the Silk Stocking Historic District that is in disrepair. They are an exception in a district of primarily well-maintained homes.

While the basic brick structure looks in relatively good condition, the exposed porches are deteriorated and will soon be lost if efforts are not made to reverse the effects of neglect. I noticed a “for sale” sign on one of the dilapidated houses when I was in the neighborhood in March. Hopefully, they will all be acquired by new owners with the resources to restore them.

Knowing what is possible is the first step toward saving a house that has been neglected. “Restoring Your Historic House, The Comprehensive Guide for Homeowners” was written to help people learn what they need to know to undertake such a project.

Signed and personalized copies of the award-winning and bestselling 720-page hardcover book are available from the author in our shop, YourHistoricHouse.com/shop/.

Our shop also carries related restoration/preservation titles by other authors.
