Lovely New Orleans Doorway

A lovely doorway in New Orleans decorated for the holiday season. This beautiful transitional Federal to Greek Revival doorway is located in an intact block of brick rowhouses in New Orleans.

The row is primarily Federal, but the emerging Greek Revival style makes an appearance in these entries. The openings, with an elliptical arched top, are Federal, but the substantial Ionic columns are Greek Revival. A completely Federal doorway would typically have thinner Doric columns.

Houses that combine elements of more than one style are not uncommon. Many were built that way, and others have had alterations in later styles.

Understanding your house’s style and how it changed over time is key to planning your restoration project. Chapter 2 of “Restoring Your Historic House, The Comprehensive Guide for Homeowners” delves deeply into this topic with hundreds of photos and case studies to help you learn to identify stylistic features and changes from the past.

Signed and personalized copies of the award-winning and bestselling 720-page hardcover book are available from the author in our shop, YourHistoricHouse.com/shop/.

It’s the perfect holiday gift for old house lovers!
