Clever Storm Door Solution

While it appears at first glance that we are seeing the historic front door on this wonderful 1808 Federal style house, in fact we are looking at a clever storm door solution. A replica of the historic door has been installed as a storm door outside the original door – which remains in place.

The only giveaways that this is not the original door are the visible hinges for an out-swing door (the original door swings in, like most entrance doors on American houses) and flush placement of the door with the surrounding trim (entry doors are typically recessed to accommodate swinging in).

For the warm weather months, the hinge pins can be pulled, and the door can be switched out for a screen door that uses the same hinges.

Storm doors and other approaches to energy efficiency are covered in “Restoring Your Historic House, The Comprehensive Guide for Homeowners.”

It is the perfect holiday gift for the old house lover on your list!
