What does spring in Maine look like? Sometimes like this…
Apologies for no new posts on Thursday morning. Mother nature decided to cut off the power to Whitten House this morning before I could get them posted. The power was down for 10.5 hours, which is the record in my 21 years living here.
We’ve been very fortunate through the years, as many other have experienced outages lasting days and weeks. We’ve also been lucky in terms of damage to the house and landscape. A few tree branches down but no real problems.
Winter can be beautiful, but it is hard on a house. Understanding how the exterior design and materials of a house function as a system to protect the interior and its inhabitants from the elements is key to restoring and maintaining things correctly – even while the work is underway.
Part 4 of “Restoring Your Historic House, The Comprehensive Guide for Homeowners” addresses these issues in the three chapters devoted to the exterior of historic houses. Other important aspects of surviving winter, including insulation, air sealing, moisture control, and HVAC systems are covered in other parts of the book.
Signed and personalized copies of the award-winning and bestselling 720-page hardcover book are available from the author at YourHistoricHouse.com/shop/ and through the shop on this page.
Our shop also carries select preservation and restoration titles by other authors. Save on cost and shipping with our multi-book combo packs!
