The Benjamin F. Arnold House

The Benjamin F. Arnold House in Providence, Rhode Island was built in 1883. It is Queen Anne in style with clear influences of the Stick Style variant of the Queen Anne. It is a double-house (also called a duplex, twin, or other regional term), hence the entry porches on both sides of the house. Arnold was a grocer and lived in one of the two units.

Although Providence is justly renowned for its Colonial-era and Early Republic homes, the city also has a wealth of wonderful Victorian-era homes as well, particularly on the West Side where this house is located. American Queen Anne emerged from the English Queen Anne style and developed its own distinctive characteristics. Stick Style and Shingle Style emerged from, and can be considered variations of, the American Queen Anne style.

Understanding the style of a house is the essential first step in developing a restoration plan that prioritizes the preservation and restoration of character-defining features while making changes necessary for modern life in an old house.

More than two dozen full-color photos illustrate the Queen Anne style in Chapter 2 of “Restoring Your Historic House, The Comprehensive Guide for Homeowners.”
