Mansard Monday ~ A Second Empire Gem

Mansard Monday ~ A Second Empire Gem in Cherryfield, Maine.

I am making a quick trip to Downeast Maine for a consulting site visit and thought I’d share one of my favorite Second Empire houses in this region.

The Frank Campbell House was designed and built by master builder/architect Charles A. Allen in 1875 and is one of a number of outstanding Victorian era houses in the village of Cherryfield. The Mansard roof form is the key character-defining feature of the Second Empire style, which shares many features with the Italianate style.

Understanding the style of a house is the essential first step in developing a restoration plan that prioritizes the preservation and restoration of character-defining features while making changes necessary for modern life in an old house.

Many examples of the Second Empire style and 24 other styles are included in Chapter 2 of “Restoring Your Historic House, The Comprehensive Guide for Homeowners.”

What are your house’s character-defining features? Chapter 2 will help you answer this question and give you the information you need to prioritize the preservation of the most important features.
