Queen Anne style house in Plaquemine, Louisiana with elaborate “Eastlake” trim, encircling two story gallery with its own “tower”, fish scale shingles, corbelled chimney caps, varied dormers with colored glass windows, a slate roof with metal and terracotta cresting.
Sanborn fire insurance maps document that this house was built before 1891 and originally had a small one-story entry porch on the right side of the facade. The elaborate two-story wrap-around porch (“gallery” in Louisiana) and enlarged roof were added between 1901 and 1906.
Emerging from English Queen Anne style, American Queen Anne developed its own distinctive characteristics, many of which are found here.
An interesting feature of this house is that the first story ceilings are 10′ tall and the second story ceilings 14′ tall, possibly to allow taller windows to help the bedrooms upstairs to be cooler on summer nights. The height difference is carried through to the gallery.
Understanding the style of a house is the essential first step in developing a restoration plan that prioritizes the preservation and restoration of character-defining features while making changes necessary for modern life in an old house.
More than 50 full-color photos illustrate the Queen Anne style in Chapter 2 of “Restoring Your Historic House, The Comprehensive Guide for Homeowners.”
