This Week’s Puzzle ~ Lyndhurst

The best way to learn about historic houses is to look at them closely, and the most fun way to look at them closely is to do a puzzle showing a wonderful historic house! So, we made a unique and interesting collection of Historic House Puzzles for you to enjoy!

Lyndhurst

National Historic Landmark “Lyndhurst,” in Tarrytown, New York, is one of America’s greatest Gothic Revival houses. It was designed by Alexander Jackson Davis as a summer house for a site overlooking the Hudson River for New York City mayor William Paulding Jr. in 1838. Built of local limestone, it was subsequently owned by merchant George Merritt, and then by railroad tycoon Jay Gould.

In 1864–1865, Merritt hired Davis to double the size of the house with a new north wing including a four-story tower, a new porte-cochere, new dining room, two additional bedrooms and servants’ quarters. Merritt also hired landscape designer Ferdinand Mangold to design the 65-acre English naturalistic style park to surround the house. Gould purchased it in 1880 and resided there until his death in 1892. Anna Gould donated the house and gardens to the National Trust in 1961. The house and park are open to the public and well worth a visit. Find more information here; lyndhurst.org
