Transitional Federal to Greek Revival

Transitional Federal to Greek Revival style house with a pyramidal hipped roof. There is a lot to love about this house in Woodville, Mississippi. The classic elliptical fanlight of the Federal style doorway, the simply detailed Greek Revival porches, and the hipped roof with belvedere echoed by the smaller hipped roof on the ell.

I suspect the porches and belvedere may be later additions, bringing the c. 1830 house up to date in the mid-19th century. The windows may have been enlarged at the same time. It is also possible that it was built as it is now, incorporating elements of both styles during the time Greek Revival was replacing Federal as the fashionable style.

Understanding the characteristic features of different architectural styles makes it possible to see how houses have been changed over time, as styles changed.

This is the first step in planning a rehabilitation that prioritizes character-defining elements to be preserved or restored, and guides changes necessary to make the house serve 21st century lives.

Federal and Greek Revival are two of 25 styles and types described and illustrated in Chapter 2 of “Restoring Your Historic House, The Comprehensive Guide for Homeowners.” Hundreds of color photos are keyed with character-defining features of each style.
