Charles and Wilhelmina Clifford House in New Bedford, Massachusetts. This striking English Queen Anne style house was designed by the Boston firm of Peabody & Stearns and built in 1881.
Clifford was a prominent local attorney and son of a Governor of the state. He also served as a judge and was president of the regional telephone company. His new house in the latest style included an impressive porte cochere with stone piers anchoring the house on the highly visible corner lot.
The Queen Anne Style developed in England and made its way to America in the late 1870s. Initially imitative of English examples, it was primarily used for grand mansions like this one.
A distinct American version of the Queen Anne emerged from the style and was eventually used for everything from mansions to millworker cottages. The Shingle Style also emerged from the English Queen Anne and its antecedents can be seen in this house.
