The best way to learn about historic houses is to look at them closely, and the most fun way to look at them closely is to do a puzzle showing a wonderful historic house! So, we made a unique and interesting collection of Historic House Puzzles for you to enjoy!
This gorgeous Georgian Colonial style mansion in Portsmouth, New Hampshire, was built for John Langdon, in 1784. He was a leading figure in New Hampshire mercantile, military and political affairs. Langdon served three terms as Governor, as a delegate to the Constitutional Convention in 1787, and as the first President pro tem of the United States Senate.
The house was built by local craftsmen who derived details from British builder’s guides by Abraham Stone. The interior joinery is attributed to Ebenezer Clifford, a leading woodworker in the area. George Washington visited the house in 1789 and described it as the best in Portsmouth.
Langon descendants restored the house and added a two-story wing at the rear in the 1890s with McKim, Mead, and White as architects. The house is now owned by Historic New England and operated as a museum house. historicnewengland.org
