This gorgeous full temple-front Greek Revival house in Thompson, Connecticut, appears to have started as a Federal style house, likely with a low-pitched hipped roof. It retains the five-bay façade, entry door with side lights, and elliptical fanlight transom of the Federal style, with the grand two-story colonnade and tall pedimented roof apparently added 30 or 40 years after the house was first built.
Understanding the characteristic features of different architectural styles makes it possible to see how houses have been changed over time, as styles changed.
This is the first step in planning a rehabilitation that prioritizes character-defining elements to be preserved or restored, and guides changes necessary to make the house serve 21st century lives.
Greek Revival is one of 25 styles and types described and illustrated in Chapter 2 of “Restoring Your Historic House, The Comprehensive Guide for Homeowners.” Hundreds of color photos are keyed with character-defining features of each style.
Signed and personalized copies of the award-winning and bestselling 720-page hardcover book are available from the author in our online shop at YourHistoricHouse.com/shop/.
