Stone House with Castellated Tower

A c. 1895 eclectic stone house with castellated tower in Gardiner, Montana.

Houses built in exotic and romantic styles were coming back into fashion around the turn of the 20th century, having had a previous period of popularity in the mid-19th century. Most romantic and fanciful houses of this period were in the Tudor Revival style and related variations. The style of this house looks back further in history for its inspiration, to the medieval period, evoking a defensive castle with its corner tower.

This is one of four stone houses built in this neighborhood around the same time that rise above the vernacular of the region. One of the others features Tudor Revival half-timbered gables and the other two have elements of the emerging Craftsman style. Located at the northern entrance to Yellowstone National Park, Gardiner was largely a rough and ready frontier town prior to the arrival of the railroad in 1902.

Exotic and eclectic architecture is not over-looked in “Restoring Your Historic House, The Comprehensive Guide for Homeowners”! It is one of 25 styles and types illustrated in Chapter 2 with character-defining features for each style keyed on the color photos.
