This delightfully eclectic house in the Gibraltar neighborhood of Council Bluffs, Iowa, was built for John G. and Lora Wadsworth by Myrtue Brothers contractors for $25,000 in 1912.
Eclectic buildings combine elements from multiple styles. In the district National Register nomination, this house is defined as “Eclectic Prairie/Arts & Crafts/Revival.” It goes on to say, “Mixes George Maher-like Arts & Crafts/Prairiesque, Foursquare, and Classical details… Likely architect designed.” A 1912 newspaper article on the construction of the house states that it was designed “by an Omaha architect.”
Chicago architect George Maher (1864 – 1926), referenced above, was an early proponent of the Prairie style and was known for blending traditional architecture with the Arts & Crafts-style.
Understanding the style of a house is the essential first step in developing a restoration plan that prioritizes the preservation and restoration of character-defining features while making changes to accommodate modern life.
Twenty-five architectural styles and types are described and illustrated in Chapter 2 of “Restoring Your Historic House, The Comprehensive Guide for Homeowners.”
