Sir Richard Vanden Bempde Johnstone House

I am currently traveling in England and am reminded daily of the degree to which so much of America’s historic architecture is rooted here in the United Kingdom.

This lovely 1804 house in the Adam style would not look at all out of place among the Federal style houses of New England and the Mid-Atlantic region built during the same period. At that time, new developments in architectural style and taste were quickly carried across the Atlantic Ocean by published builder’s guides.

Later in the 19th century, magazine publishing would vastly increase the transmission of information about advances in architecture and interior design from the UK to America. By the mid-19th century, well-read Americans had no trouble keeping up with the latest styles in London.

Federal style is among the 25 architectural styles and types described and illustrated in Chapter 2 of “Restoring Your Historic House, The Comprehensive Guide for Homeowners.”

Signed and personalized copies of the award-winning and bestselling 720-page hardcover book are available directly from the author in our online bookshop at YourHistoricHouse.com. Link in bio.

The classic volume on identifying historic house styles, “A Field Guide to American Houses” by Virginia McAlester, is also available in our shop.
