The Arthur and Belle English House

Built in 1911, the Arthur and Belle English House in Omaha, Nebraska, was designed in the Prairie Style by local architect John McDonald. Prairie Style features include the overall masonry base platform, horizontal massing, and battered corners. The brown brick with tile accents, clay tile roof, and exposed rafter tails are drawn from the Craftsman style, which is often combined with Prairie massing. The suspended entry canopy contributes to the horizontality of the design while also providing an interesting focal point for the facade.

Understanding the style of a house is the essential first step in developing a restoration plan that prioritizes the preservation and restoration of character-defining features while making changes necessary for modern life in an old house.

Prairie and Craftsman are two of 25 styles described and illustrated in Chapter 2 of “Restoring Your Historic House, The Comprehensive Guide for Homeowners.”
