The back parlor fireplace in the Smith House.
A lovely 19th century mantel and mirrored over-mantel is the focal point of this room. Note how the wall color was chosen to compliment the beautiful Victorian tile on the fireplace surround and hearth. Although painting the walls a solid color is a contemporary treatment (the Victorians loved pattern!), the use of a complementary color keeps it related to the historic character of the space.
The C. Sydney and Emily Smith House was built in 1877. It is one of the 13 Featured Houses photographed by noted architectural photographer David Clough and presented between the how-to chapters of Restoring Your Historic House, The Comprehensive Guide for Homeowners. https://www.facebook.com/davecloughphoto/
