A Fine Georgian Colonial Door Pediment

A finely crafted and carved 18th century Georgian door pediment in Portsmouth, NH

The Georgian Colonial style was the first architectural style used in the future United States that looked toward Classical precedents as filtered through the English Renaissance and into the published builder’s guides of the 18th century. English craftsmen (and their builder’s guides) crossed the Atlantic and brought the latest English styles to the colonies where the expanding wealthy and middle classes eagerly adopted them.

Georgian Colonial is one of 25 historic architectural styles described and illustrated in Chapter 2 of Restoring Your Historic House, The Comprehensive Guide for Homeowners. Understanding the style of your house and will help you understand which features are character-defining so you can prioritize their preservation.
