A Queen Anne Cottage in Original Colors

The Queen Anne style cottage that was home to L.L. Bean in Freeport, Maine.

While many examples of the Queen Anne style are large, this lovely cottage in the style shows that it was used for more modest houses as well. This house was recently returned to its original color scheme through the use of cross section microscopy to analyze the many layers of paint on the building.

Queen Anne is one of 25 styles and types illustrated in Chapter 2 of Restoring Your Historic House, The Comprehensive Guide for Homeowners. Understanding the style of a house is the essential first step in developing a restoration plan that prioritizes the preservation and restoration of character-defining features while making changes necessary for modern life in an old house.
