Faded Beauty

Porches are made for summer evenings. Unfortunately, their exposed position makes them vulnerable to deterioration and they are often lost due to neglected maintenance. Original porches are always a character defining feature of a house and should be preserved or restored if at all possible.

This Queen Anne brick house, located in Alabama, appears to have been abandoned for some time and while the basic brick structure looks to be in relatively good condition, the exposed porches are deteriorated and will soon be lost if efforts are not made soon to reverse the effects of neglect.

Restoring Your Historic House, The Comprehensive Guide for Homeowners includes information on porch repair and designing appropriate and compatible replacements for porches that have been lost.
