Hearth and Home

Thanksgiving preparations are underway here at Whitten House, where the holiday feast will be cooked on the restored 1827 cooking hearth and brick oven.

Cast iron stoves largely replaced open fires for heating and cooking in the mid-19th century and the cooking hearth and oven at Whitten House were removed at some point later in the century. As part of the restoration of the house, they were reconstructed based on physical and documentary evidence.

The restoration of this room is an Example Project in Restoring Your Historic House, The Comprehensive Guide for Homeowners. The book has shipped from the printer and will be released on December 10th.
