This project was done by Isa Celic of Opus Tile Restoration in the UK. Encaustic and other types of floor tile became widely popular in the UK and the US during the second half of the 19th century. In many cases they were later covered over after being damaged, waiting to be rediscovered and restored. Projects like this are often beyond the skills of do-it-yourself restorers (but not always). Fortunately there are skilled craftspeople with the experience and knowledge to undertake such work.
Restoring Your Historic House, The Comprehensive Guide for Homeowners includes information on dealing with historic tile, including leads on finding appropriate replacement pieces. Fortunately we have tiles restorers as talented as Isa here in the US as well.
The 720-page hardcover book was released earlier this month and is available online and in bookstores nationwide. Signed copies can be ordered directly from the author at YourHistoricHouse.com.
If your local bookstore doesn’t carry the book, please ask them to contact their rep at W.W. Norton to order copies.
