The Wedding Cake House

What do you get when you wrap a brick Federal style house in wood Gothic Revival trim? The famed Wedding Cake House! It was built in 1825 and received its Gothic trim in 1852.

I was recently contacted by the owner’s representative about providing some preservation consulting services for upcoming restoration and rehab work to this fabulous house. It is one of the possibilities I am excited about for the coming year!

Few historic buildings stand today exactly as they were built, and many have had substantial changes in the past. The Wedding Cake House is a great example of this, though many are more subtle. Chapter 2 of Restoring Your Historic House, The Comprehensive Guide for Homeowners explores how to spot and understand these changes to help you identify what features of a house a character defining and worthy of preservation.

Restoring Your Historic House, The Comprehensive Guide for Homeowners, is filled with information to help historic house lovers restore their homes. It is a 720-page, hardcover volume containing more than 2,000 photos and drawings. It can be found in bookstores nationwide and through online retailers. Signed copies can be ordered directly from the author on this site.
