Gothic Revival Charmer in New Orleans.

This is one of my favorite houses in New Orleans, a classic double-shotgun house decked out in Gothic Revival style. I was in New Orleans two years ago for the Society for Historic Archeology conference and running around photographing houses in the French Quarter on a break when this house stopped me in my tracks.
An architectural survey photo from 1962 (below) shows the house with a massive striped aluminum awning covering the porch and masking much of the charm of the house. It now has been beautifully restored.

Gothic Revival was one of the first of the Romantic styles to sweep the country during the Victorian period. Promoted by popular house design books by Andrew Jackson Downing and others, examples were built across the nation.

Gothic Revival is one of the 25 styles and types illustrated in Chapter 2 of Restoring Your Historic House, The Comprehensive Guide for Homeowners. Understanding the style of a house is the essential first step in developing a restoration plan that prioritizes the preservation and restoration of character-defining features while making changes necessary for modern life in an old house.

The 720-page hardcover book is available online and in bookstores nationwide. Signed copies can be ordered directly from the author on this site.

If your local bookstore doesn’t carry the book, please ask them to contact their rep at W.W. Norton to order it.
