Before and After ~ Second Empire Gem

This wonderful Second Empire house came across my feed this morning. It is a great example of what can be done to save a historic house with the right combination of knowledge and other resources. Houses like this one were built in urbanized areas across the US during the second half of the 19th century, providing stylish and comfortable houses for middle-class families. Many were neglected after much of the middle-class shifted to suburbs outside the urban centers in the 20th century. Now, “empty nest” baby boomers and millennials are moving back to cities in large numbers and houses like this are being restored.

Restoring Your Historic House, The Comprehensive Guide for Homeowners was written to help those people, and anyone else who wants to restore a house with sensitivity to its character-defining features.

The 720-page hardcover book is now available in bookstores and from online retailers (currently 35% off on Amazon! http://ow.ly/N7ba50y4PSL). Signed copies are available directly from the author on this site.

Your local bookstore can order copies from their W.W. Norton rep.
