Beginning in the mid-19th century, the Victorians loved colored glass and used a lot of it in their homes. It’s popularity continued into the 20th century and was used in homes of many styles. Whether produced by a master artist or in a decorator’s factory, it is characteristic of the time and important to the character of the house. It should be preserved. There are experts who can restore damaged stained glass and provide advice for maintaining glass that has survived without damage.
This lovely transom window dates to 1902 and features stylized floral elements of the then emerging Art Nouveau style combined with more typical Victorian elements.
Decorative art glass is discussed in Restoring Your Historic House, The Comprehensive Guide for Homeowners. The 720-page hardcover book is now available in bookstores and from online retailers (it is currently 36% off on Amazon! http://ow.ly/N7ba50y4PSL).
