Naumkeag, a Shingle Style summer “cottage” designed by Stanford White of McKim, Mead & White in 1885.

Stanford White was one of America’s most gifted architects in the 19th century and the firm McKim, Mead & White one of the most prolific. The first Shingle Style cottage, W.R. Emerson’s Redwood at Bar Harbor, was built in 1879 and by the mid-1880s the style was all the rage in resort communities. Naumkeag was built for a New York attorney and his family in Stockbridge, MA, in the Berkshire mountains. In the early 20th century, famed landscape designer Fletcher Steele created the extensive gardens.

Twenty-five architectural styles are described and illustrated in Chapter 2 of Restoring Your Historic House, The Comprehensive Guide for Homeowners. Understanding the style of a house will help you understand which features are character-defining so you can prioritize their preservation.

Winner of the MWPA 2020 Excellence in Publishing Award, the 720-page best-selling hardcover book is available in bookstores and from online retailers (it is currently 34% off on Amazon! http://ow.ly/Uumq50zRjJ5).
