Second Empire Bay Window

A Second Empire/Italianate style bay window. This detail shot is of a bay window on a Second Empire style house. It could as easily be on an Italianate style house, as the two styles are only differentiated by the roof form. Note the scroll-cut ornamental panels mounted inside the arched windows, visible through the glass. The restrained paint treatment does a nice job of showing off the carved ornament on the house without over-doing it.

Second Empire and Italianate are two of 25 historic architectural styles and types described and illustrated in Chapter 2 of Restoring Your Historic House, The Comprehensive Guide for Homeowners. Understanding the style of a house and will help you understand which features are character-defining so you can prioritize their preservation. The 720-page award-winning and best-selling hardcover book is available in bookstores and from online retailers (it is currently 34% off on Amazon! http://ow.ly/N7ba50y4PSL).
