I love the columns on this wonderful Italianate style portico. I first noticed them decades ago and always enjoyed seeing them when I passed by. I became concerned over time as they were allowed to deteriorate until they were unsalvageable. Fortunately, new owners had them replicated exactly and this wonderful example of the creativity of Victorian millwork shops is preserved.
Original porches and porticos are always character defining features of a historic house and often are found in poor condition due to their exposed locations. Preserving these features, or restoring them if lost, is key to maintaining or restoring the historic character of a house.
The repair and/or restoration of porches is covered in Restoring Your Historic House, The Comprehensive Guide for Homeowners.
