Restored burlap wall covering in an 1896 cottage. I as reminded this morning that three years ago today I was completing the installation of this burlap wall covering in an 1896 shingle style cottage on the coast of Maine. The original material had been covered with sheet paneling in the 1960s and was beyond salvaging when uncovered during restoration.
Readers of my book may recognize this room from the Beam Replacement Example Project in Chapter 7: Structural Concerns. The day the photos were taken, I was applying liquid fire retardant to the installed burlap. Subsequently, stained battens and quarter-round were installed over seams and edges of the burlap to hide the staples holding it in place, replicating the original treatment (which used tacks instead of staples).
Replacing the dark paneling and reinstalling burlap wall covering in this room dramatically brightened the space and returned it to its original character.
Wall coverings are addressed in Chapter 18 of Restoring Your Historic House, The Comprehensive Guide for Homeowners. The 720-page hardcover book now available in bookstores and from online retailers (it is currently 34% off on Amazon! http://ow.ly/N7ba50y4PSL).
