This detail shot is of a fabulous early 20th century bay window on a relatively restrained and simple Mediterranean Revival-Spanish Colonial Revival style house built in 1928. This bay is located on a side elevation. Although the window sash shape is Gothic Revival, this was built long after that style was popular – suggesting they were perhaps intended to evoke the “Moorish” Islamic influences found in southern Spain.
The eclectic mixing of stylistic elements and influences can make the study of historic houses endlessly interesting. The preservation of such features should be a high priority when restoring a home.
Spanish Colonial Revival is one of 25 historic architectural styles described and illustrated in Chapter 2 of Restoring Your Historic House, The Comprehensive Guide for Homeowners. Understanding the style of a house and will help you understand which features are character-defining so you can prioritize their preservation.
