The Victoria Mansion

The Victoria Mansion (Morse-Libby Mansion) in Portland, ME is one of America’s great 19th century museum houses.

The Italianate style house designed by architect Henry Austin was built between 1858 and 1860 and contains the only surviving intact interiors by Gustave Herter, the leading American decorator of the period. More than 90% of the original finishes and furnishings remain in the house.

A museum since the 1940s, its on-going restoration merits visiting regularly to see the progress. Although closed for the 2020 season due to Covid-19, conservation and restoration have continued in the parlor. Visit their website at: victoriamansion.org.

Brownstone was a wildly popular exterior material for houses for several decades in the 19th century but proved susceptible to acid rain and other pollutants in the 20th. Several approaches to brownstone restoration have been undertaken on the exterior of the mansion. They are described and illustrated in Chapter 12 of Restoring Your Historic House, The Comprehensive Guide for Homeowners.

The 720-page award-winning and best-selling hardcover book is now available in bookstores and from online retailers (it is currently 32% off on Amazon! http://ow.ly/N7ba50y4PSL).
