New Flashing for a Slate Roof

New flashing for a slate Mansard roof. Slate is a very long-lasting roofing material, often outlasting the sheet metal flashing that seals around its edges. It is also an important character-defining feature of any building, particularly when installed in multiple colors on a highly visible Mansard roof, as here.

Mansard roofs on Second Empire style house often have (or had) decorative patterning in polychrome slate. These typically have slates of several shapes arranged in bands of patterning. Surviving roofs of this type are highly significant to the character of the house and should be preserved.

Roofing is the first line of defense against the elements. When flashing begins to fail on such a roof, it is possible to temporarily remove only enough slates to install new flashing, as is being done here. The bright new copper flashing is visible at the edge of the cornice on the right side.

Slate roofing is covered in Chapter 11 of Restoring Your Historic House, The Comprehensive Guide for Homeowners. The 720 page award-winning and best-selling hardcover book is available in bookstores and from online retailers (it is currently 22% off on Amazon! http://ow.ly/Uumq50zRjJ5).
