Home for the Holidays

Since the late 19th century, Americans have looked back nostalgically to the “the old home place” during the holidays. In the 20th century, Norman Rockwell tapped into this emotional wellspring in many of his famous works. It really isn’t surprising that a nation of people on the move (Go west, young man!) would develop a strong attachment to memories of where they came from. Home for the Holidays is an American tradition.

This Greek Revival style house with attached Italianate carriage house is the type of New England homestead many people left to move west in the 19th century. Some of us are still drawn to these houses, attracted by the architecture but also to an idea of “home” that connects to the past and reminds us that we are part of something bigger and longer than the historical moment we happen to live in. I wrote “Restoring Your Historic House, The Comprehensive Guide for Homeowners” for those people.

The 720 page award-winning and best-selling hardcover book is available in bookstores nationwide and through online retailers.
