Wilderstein

Wilderstein, a Hudson River Valley Queen Anne.

Originally an Italianate style country home designed by John Warren Ritch in 1852, it was remodeled and enlarged in the Queen Anne style in 1888 by architect Arnout Cannon.

When I first visited the house, shortly after it opened as a museum in the early 1990’s, it had not been painted in many decades and was in rough shape. The non-profit that owns and operates it has done a wonderful job with the on-going restoration. It is well worth a visit!

It is shown as an example of the Queen Anne style in Chapter 2 of “Restoring Your Historic House, The Comprehensive Guide for Homeowners.” Queen Anne is one of 25 styles and types illustrated in the chapter. Understanding the style, or styles, of a house will help you identify which features are character-defining so you can prioritize their preservation.

The 720-page hardcover book now available in bookstores nationwide and from online retailers.
