Barn at Dow Farm

A view in the barn at Dow Farm. Many historic houses had accompanying barns or carriage houses at one time and where they survive, their preservation is important. At Dow Farm, the existing barn was built in the late 19th century, replacing an smaller earlier barn. During the decades-long restoration of the buildings on the farm, the barn was the last to have its exterior restored. The last of the 20th century asbestos siding was replaced with wood shingles in 2019

Dow Farm is one of the 13 featured homes shot by noted architectural photographer David Clough for “Restoring Your Historic House, The Comprehensive Guide for Homeowners.” Ranging in date from the 1760’s to 1957 and geographically from Maine to New Mexico, these beautifully restored houses are placed between the how-to chapters of the book to illustrate approaches described in the text and provide inspiration for your project.

Read about the 40+ year restoration of this property and the unique partnership between a young man with a passion for preservation and the family that has owned the farm since the early 19th century which resulted in the farm being saved and restored.
