A sweet Dutch Colonial Revival cottage in northern Maine. The Colonial Revival style is perhaps America’s most enduring residential architectural style. They ranged from “Dutch Colonial” cottages like this one to grand mansions, with the former a popular option in mail-order kit house catalogs by Aladdin, Sears, and others in the early twentieth century. They also appeared in house plan catalogs, where the blueprints could be ordered from the publisher.
This example is located in Millinocket, Maine. The town was incorporated in 1901 and is filled with early 20th century houses built to house workers for the paper mill built at the turn of the century. The paper company built the town to support the mill. Today the paper mill is closed and the town is the gateway to the Mount Katahdin region, including Baxter State Park and the Katahdin Woods and Waters National Monument.
Colonial Revival is one of 25 styles described and illustrated with multiple examples in Chapter 2 of “Restoring Your Historic House, The Comprehensive Guide for Homeowners.”
